Gemotions

The postman’s footsteps faded away, but Amelia remained frozen on her porch. Her pulse pounded in her ears. She hadn't felt this rattled in a long time. The card felt like a viper in her grip.

She slammed the door, and the sound reverberated through the house. The shadows seemed to lengthen, the familiar furniture taking on sinister shapes. She poured herself a glass of water, and her hand shook so much she spilled it.

She unfolded the card. A cartoon caricature of herself stared back at her. Her breath hitched. A speech bubble contained the words, “Another year older.” She threw the card into the fireplace, and watched the paper curl and burn.
